Effects of Lexical Density and Lexical Variety in Language Performance and Proficiency

Effects of Lexical Density and Lexical Variety in Language
Performance and Proficiency

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to explore the effects of lexical density and lexical variety in language
performance and proficiency of the written scripts of tenth
class regional medium students. The exam scripts are
collected as data, the learners aged between 14 and 16
years. The main purpose of the study is to establish the use
of lexicon in the written scripts would exhibit language
knowledge of the learners. The cognitive theory of
learning used in the present study to ascertain the use of
measures i.e. lexical density and variety would aid in the
language learning. Brown’s (1973) observations showed
that there was a predictable order of acquisition of certain
morpheme in English. Jean Ure’s (1971) basic method of
lexical density is used to analyze the data. Robinson’s
(1995) measure of complexity is used to find out the
lexical variety. This reliable and valid measure of lexical
density and variety in the written scripts will be useful for
determining the factors that affect the language
performance and proficiency which is related lexicon.

Keywords
Lexical density, Lexical variety, Language performance,
Language proficiency, Vocabulary, Lexicon.

IBM’s The Great Mind Challenge 2016

IBM’s The Great Mind Challenge

IBM
IBM’s The Great Mind Challenge (TGMC) promotes students from engineering colleges from across India in their endeavour to develop solutions for real-time problems and scenarios using IBM open source software. It is aimed to encourage students who aspire to make key contributions to develop applications on cutting-edge IBM technologies while providing them with an opportunity to improve their software-writing skills.
Universities provide excellent learning environments, but find it difficult to teach students about an IT transformation in progress unless those driving the transformation – IT companies at the helm of transformation – provide real-time input and support.
TGMC is an outreach of the IBM Academic Initiative, a global program that facilitates the collaboration between IBM and educators to teach students the IT skills they need to be competitive and keep pace with changes in the workplace.
Who can participate: If you are a UG/PG engineering student from an AICTE approved college, all you need to do is register. Form a team consisting of two to three students from your institution. Register yourselves on Bluemix and on TGMC. They will then provide your team with the project scenarios and technical resources to build a super project.
For more details and to register, visit IBM The Great Mind Challenge’s website.
The contest closes on February 15, 2016.
Over to you: Please help us and others by sharing this post with your friends/groups who may find it useful. If you know anyone who would be interested, tag them here in the comments/share this post with them.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BIT AND A BYTE?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BIT AND A BYTE?

The IBM PC and its clones generally use 8 bits (electrical pulses) to make up a byte (computer word.) A ninth "odd bit" is used for error checking (parity testing) to make sure the other eight bits are not accidentally erased or lost during storage or use by the computer.

Bits are like alphabet characters and bytes are like the words made up from alphabet characters. Bits and Bytes are used to measure information by the computer.

BIT
Smallest unit of information recognized by the computer. BIT is short for Binary Digit. A Binary Digit can be either a 0 or a 1. Several bits make up a byte.

BYTE
A group of 8 BITS. This grouping of adjacent binary digits (bits) is operated on by the computer as a unit. Computers use 1

BYTE to represent 1 character such as a letter of the alphabet, a number, a punctuation mark, a space, etc. A BYTE is also a unit of measure since it represents 1 character.
For example, when the letter "A" is pressed, the keyboard actually sends the following to RAM: 10000001 - a set of 8 bits.
