Punctuation Marks
A woman without her man is nothing
An English professor wrote THIS on the whiteboard:
“A woman without her man is nothing”
and asked his students to punctuate it correctly.
All the males in the class wrote:
“A woman, without her man, is nothing”
All the females in the class wrote:
“A woman: without her, man is nothing”
Punctuation is powerful!
What is punctuation?
Punctuation isn’t GRAMMAR.
Grammar is all about WORDS. The way they work together.
Punctuation is just a set of marks/squiggles used to make reading easier. Just a way of using marks on the page – or on the screen - to make the text clearer and to make reading easier.
Punctuation marks include
? question mark (Americans call it a question point)
! exclamation mark
, comma
: colon
. full stop (period in American English)
; semi colon
“ ” quotation marks
‘ ’ inverted commas
¶ The pilcrow
