Ready for Self-Enumeration? A Step-by-Step Guide to the 2026 Census

The 2026 Census process has officially begun, and for the first time, the central government is offering a Self-Enumeration option. This allows you to securely enter your family’s details online without waiting for an enumerator to visit your home, saving time for everyone involved.

The self-enumeration window is open from April 20 to May 10, 2026. Here is everything you need to know to complete the process smoothly.

🌐 Getting Started

To begin, visit the official self-enumeration portal: https://se.census.gov.in.

Step 1: Registering the Head of Family

  • Once on the website, look for the "Self-Enumeration (Self-Houselisting)" login.

  • Select your state, enter your mobile number, and click "Fetch".

  • An OTP will be sent to your mobile. Enter the name of the head of the household, their mobile number, and email ID.

  • Note: The name of the head of the family cannot be changed once entered, so ensure it is accurate.

  • Enter the OTP received from the login portal and click "Verify OTP".

🏠 Locating Your Home

  • After verification, a window will open with fields for State, District, and PIN Code.

  • Select your specific Village/Town/Ward from the dropdown menu.

  • A map will appear. Use the search bar to find a nearby landmark.

  • Carefully pin your residence's exact location on the map. You will be asked, "Confirm location?"; click "Yes" to proceed.

📝 Filling Out the Details

The questionnaire is divided into several key sections:

1. Housing Characteristics

  • Enter details regarding the house number and materials used for the walls, roof, and floor.

  • If you live in a multi-story building, select the floor your flat is located on.

  • Indicate if the house is in good condition or needs significant repairs.

2. Household Members

  • List the number of people living in the house, including their gender and relationship to the head of the household.

  • Indicate if any member belongs to a Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST).

  • Provide the number of married couples living in the household.

3. Amenities and Assets

  • Drinking Water: Specify the primary source of drinking water and its proximity (e.g., within 100 meters or further).

  • Sanitation: Detail the type of toilet facility and drainage system used.

  • Fuel & Energy: Select the primary fuel used for cooking (e.g., LPG/PNG) and the main source of lighting.

  • Assets: Mark whether the household owns items like a radio, television, internet connection, laptop/computer, telephone/mobile, or vehicles (bicycle/scooter/car).

✅ Final Review and Submission

Before finishing, the system will show a "Preview" of all entered data.

  • Review everything carefully. If corrections are needed, use the "Edit" option.

  • Once satisfied, click "Save" and then "Submit".

  • Important: Once you click Submit, no further changes can be made.

  • A confirmation message will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.

What Happens Next?

When the official enumerator visits your area, simply provide them with your Self-Enumeration reference number. They will verify the information, making the process quick and hassle-free for your family.

Don't wait—complete your self-enumeration by May 10 and contribute to a successful 2026 Census!
