Nature forms its own garden. The seeds are carried from one place to another by animals or birds. The seeds that could not be carried by the animal or birds from place to place are carried by winds.

CLARA BARTON

Clara Barton

"Clara Barton"

Every time in the world someone receives first aid
You can thank Clara Barton for the life that is saved
She lived out her life in a world ruled by men
Every time they knocked her down she got back up again
Clara Barton.
Civil war veterans with tears in their eyes
Told how she braved the battle just to save their lives
She never ran from the shot and the shell
Bringing aid and comfort in the midst of hell.
And even then at the war's very end
When the prisoners were lost and without friends
She helped families to find those that they loved
A professional angel sent from up above.

Thank the lord for Clara Barton and long live her name
The American Red Cross is her claim to fame
When you see a Red Cross worker in a time of flood or war
Take a moment to remember...and thank the lord...for
Clara Barton!

Summary:
Clara Barton is considered as the professional angel sent from up above. She is a strong portrait of a nurse engaging in large scale patient advocacy. Barton is a female pioneer who lasts as a public health administrator.

When the American Civil War started, she wanted to help the soldiers, so she resigned her job at the patent office (She always insisted for an equal wage) She was one of only a few women working for the government at that time.

Clara was persistent, courageous and caring. When the American Civil War began, she took initiative and organized a system to send medicine and supplies to wounded soldiers. Clara lobbied the War Department continuously, till they gave her permission to pass through the battle lines for distributing supplies, searching for missing soldiers, and nursing the wounded. Clara continued to aid the wounded throughout the war and risked her own life on many occasions. But she continued to serve. Clara was bold as a lion when it came to helping others.

She got permission from the war department to go to the front lines of the battle field and care for the soldiers. It was not an easy job. She comported the soldiers, bought and prepared food for them, and searched for missing soldiers. In the years following the civil war she was able to reunite thousands of soldiers and their families.

Clara founded the American Association of the International Red Cross, when she was 60 years old. Clara was affectionately known as the ‘angel of the battlefield’ for her life’s work. Clara’s persistence, ability to organise and vision for easing the pain of those suffering resulted in a lasting legacy known as the American Red Cross.

A Day in the Life of a Flat Hunter

Alan Townend, the author has taught in Switzerland and Germany. He has written many funny short stories to learn English.

Erika Weiss hail to German and Peter Jarvls is of London. They personally met one other at the London Airport. But, they had corresponded each other nearly for three years. Erika has come to work for a year at the London's office. She started staying at hostel. But she was uncomfortable at the hostel. She did not have privacy and food was horrible. She had to be at the hostel by eleven in the evening. Ultimately, she decided to find a flat of her own. As she was new to London, she could not understand the flat/accommodation  advertisements. So, she decided to approach her friend Peter for help.

Peter mentioned that finding a flat in London is not an easy task. He explained that he himself has got the flat with a great difficulty. He also said that at a point of time he felt to join in a hostel.

Peter advises her in many ways. He asks her to buy the first edition of one of the London newspapers and then she has to search in flat/accommodation advertisements. Later she had to make the call first for meeting of the flat owner. He even says that when she answers the telephone for a flat not to give an impression that she really is in bad need of the flat. He emphasizes to make her the call as if she has dozens of other flats in her hand.

Peter has a lot of experience on flat accommodations. He says that according to the character of the street the dollar rate changes. In fact, he gives even more tips for speaking too. If price is above the expectation then he tells her to use statements like 'there is no private bath or not interested, after all when compared with other.. as to his prior experience. He says that even the worst of all flats with unpainted, broken windows and dirty houses are not reasonable.

Finally Erika understood that Peter has got a flat with help of an agency after paying a small amount. The agency had given him three addresses. However, he settled in the second address. She actually liked the idea of getting the flat through an agency.

After Twenty Years

AFTER TWENTY YEARS
                                                                                                                                 - O Henry
O Henry is the pen name of American writer William Sydney Porter. Porter’s 400 short stories are known for their wit, word play, characterization and the clever use of twist endings. O Henry stories are famous for their surprise endings, to the point that such an ending is often referred as an “O Henry ending”.

Jimmy Wells and Bob were two best friends. They grew up like brothers. When, Bob and Jimmy were 18 and 20 years respectively. They parted to seek their fortunes. Before their departure they had an agreement. It was to meet exactly after twenty years at the same place and time irrespective of their conditions. Bob went to West to make his fortune. Jimmy was in New York because he thought that it was the only place on the earth.

But when Bob went to West he turned out to be a notorious criminal. He was a wanted criminal in Chicago. The police was in search of him. On the other hand Jimmy became a policeman in New York.

After twenty years at the appointed time Bob was waiting at the place where they departed. It was the same time which they wanted to meet. Just then, a policeman came to him. Bob said that he was waiting there to meet his friend, Jimmy Wells. He was very desperate. He said that he would wait for his friend another half an hour. The policeman wished Bob good luck and was about to leave. Then Bob lighted his cigar in that light policeman saw Bob’s face and then he realized him as the notorious criminal, who wanted in Chicago.

After some time a man in plain clothes came and introduced himself as Jimmy Wells. Bob’s happiness was boundless. Jimmy and Bob exchanged greetings and views about their ancient good times.  They walked a little distance to have had another dinner after twenty years. They reached the drug store which was brilliant with electric lights. There each of them turned to see other’s face too eagerly. Then Bob realized that who was walking arm in arm along with him was not Jimmy. Bob stopped suddenly and released his arm. Bob knew Jimmy by his Roman nose. Then the man in plain clothes revealed that he was policeman and arrested Bob ten minutes ago. He handed over a note to Bob. The note was from his best friend Jimmy Wells- the first policeman.

The note was written as Bob had met him earlier was Jimmy himself. But he realized that his old friend was a wanted man in Chicago and could not arrest him who had come to see his after twenty years. So he had sent a plain clothed man to do the duty.
